Who’s next ? A question to the wounded society : Mohamed Nisthar

KP_Selvarajah_PathmanathanPirabakaran 2007Aside from a sporadic sign of dissatisfaction there has been no big  hoo-ha about the arrest of KP, the self proclaimed Tamil Tigers’ new leader Selvaratnam Pathamanathn, in place of former commander in chief VP. KP’s arrest has long been merely a question of when rather than if. That was one of the reasons for Tamils not to bother too much about his arrest on 06th August 2009.

When VP’s death was confirmed, the Sri Lankan government had lots of breathing space, a mood of relief and KP was not their public enemy no 1, they did not attempt to go for him as a must do job. However KP’s  interview on Channel 4 on 22nd July 2009 seemed to be the red button being pressed.  KP’s 3.30 minutes interview out of 9.36 minutes brief documentary about the aftermath of the Tamil Tigers may be the reason for the Sri Lankan government to speed up the chase for KP.

Most people considered that the interview was a missed opportunity. He could have put his case  for Tamils across to the international  community more effectively. He should have made the international community think that it was time for them to put full scale pressure on the Sri Lankan government, if not intervening in Sri Lanka. Since he was aware of the interview he was supposed to give, he could have at least prepared to talk sensibly, but nothing happened in fulfilling the expectations of anxious Sri Lankan Tamils worldwide. Rather it alerted the Sri Lanka government to prepare for their very calculated move against him.

On 19th May 2009 KP announced that the Tamil Tigers silenced their weapons, but on 22nd July 2009, quite contrarily or more rightly saying,  stupidly announced that there were 1500 carders waiting for his instructions. What at most could those 1500 carders do at his order? For argument’s sake  1500 suicide attacks, killing 15,000 or another zero added amount of more people. Would that bring a separate Tamil Ealam or would that kind of talk at least encourage the government, which bravely confronted the risk posed by a 24,000 or so Tiger fighters, to mend the way they had against Tamil Tigers. His appalling interview in the capacity of a leader of a society, which is totally confused for the direction for their political journey, irritated many.  And in my view made them ask one important question as to who’s next. This question cannot necessarily be who’s going to be in the government’s arrest list. But who’s the next in line for hierarchy with substance.

In finding a suitable head ,  one would remember the German sociologist Max Weber’s classification of leaders. He says  there are three types of them, namely, traditional, bureaucratic and charismatic. Theses are the leaders  who come and go in ruling countries, leading nations in their struggle, finding solutions to the issues which emerge all of a sudden without any warnings.

In the Tamil community and Sri Lanka as a whole we had all kind of leaders as Weber ascribes, but none of them delivered the right solution  to the very delicate issue of  ethnic strife in a country which has an ethnic mosaic.
Traditional leaders, like anyone in the TNA, keep changing their stand according to their personal gains rather than society’s. Tamils have been having this sort of leaders since the independence. They  have been  useful for sorting out small things such as providing employment and bringing a modern building to their constituency with their own money making motive. People do not pay that much attention to their ulterior motives because of these leaders’ temporary tenure.  However they have not been capable to be entrusted for a big job like solving ethnic problems or  nation building.

Bureaucratic leaders cannot be much different from traditional leaders apart from  their stand to stick with rules. These kind of leaders normally do not have creativeness nor are interested in finding ways of solving problems, their method of running a public office is almost a routine and  keeps an eye on the ways of retaining power.

Charismatic leaders, on the other hand, always have a magical power to make people listen and believe what they say. But it’s not yet proven that this type of leaders survive forever politically, because they tend to do things which are not right but which they believe will be accepted. Once this is confronted they cannot accept that and try to manipulate it to prove they are right.

Though the above classifications  still prevail and we are faced with these kind of leaders again and again in Sri Lankan politics,  the post modern society , however, indentifies different sort of leaders.  Bureaucratic military ones with intelligence and well informed of the trend. The other kind , the   leaders, who do not need positions or  office to lead a nation, but remain as  leaders. These are the so called people’s leaders.

At this crucial point of political journey of the Tamils, it is natural to look for a leader, not anyone under the classification of Weber, but a different one, maybe a hybrid one.   No doubt the late Tiger leader VP would come to many people’s mind as a strong military leader, until we were informed of his suspiciously  cowardly death at the bank of Nanthi lagoon. But the question to answer is still, was he also intelligent enough to lead a nation, and well informed of the political trend of the global village? A commonly accepted point, except by diehard Tiger supporters, that he’s neither a committed military  personnel nor intelligent one nor had a matured political outlook.  For many  he was merely a hit and run guy.  However he had talent to make his followers believe that he had unprecedented leadership qualities or that he was a sort of 007, who always acts to produce ultimate triumph.

Previously self proclaimed leader VP has left a legacy , which  what a large proportion of the Tamil community believes, to be a political vacuum.  However  I strongly argue that this is not the case. This so called  political vacuum has not been created by the demise  of VP, but at the time when he proclaimed himself as sole leader of the Tamils without their mandate or at least  at the time of the assassination of Mr. A. Amirthalingam. Therefore  a real political vacuum started to emerge  before he died. The situation since 18th May 2009, has been merely a semblance of political vacuum.  This is a reassuring period, which will soon disappear and with or without a leader the  political journey of Tamils will go ahead. As it had been from the time of assassination of Mr. Amirthalingam to the Nathikadal saga.

If the post VP situation required  a leader and KP was one of the contenders for the leadership, how pathetic was it for a foreign elite like Mr. V. Rutherakumar, an attorney,  to declare implicitly  that they under the leadership of KP were contemplating to set up a transnational government,  possibly a consortium  for money making activities, in foreign soil in the name of Tamils. Once again without their mandate. What leadership qualities, if any, of KP suggest that he would have been the right person to lead the Tamils through this miserable phase of their political journey.   Did KP fit into any of Weber’s classifications. Or was he in the inner circle of military strategists. Was he able to effectively convey a message to the world. After all he appeared to be physically a sick man without any potential, other than procuring arms.  His arrest maybe a good omen for the peace loving Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Still it is not clear whether the self proclaimed sole lessee of the Tamil community, the Tamil Tigers,  have identified any suitable person to lead them. Once it is done then that leadership has to confront with possible arrest or extradition or even an assassination attempt like the one, which caused the life of Mrs. Morgan Tsvangirai of Zimbabwe or Dr. Kelly of UK or the local example of Lasantha Wicramasinge. Once he is immunized  from the above permanently then to face the people to confirm his leadership. Nothing will happen if they behave with the mentality of a “born again Christian”, who reassure themselves that they will not go back to their past ways, but  fail to question their overall integrity.

After all why the remaining Tamil tigers or the pro tigers think that they have a moral duty to offer political leadership to the Tamils, since they killed their own people, for whom they said they fought, but treated the people like sand sacks to protect themselves, I do not think that they have to bother any longer. No governments locally or internationally will be engaged with the tigers. Tamils cannot afford to pay  a huge price again simply because the tigers  think they are the right people to protect the Tamils.

Why can’t the remaining tiger supporters compromise with recent initiatives taken by  some neutral bodies in addressing Tamils issues with a broader outlook. One of them is the initiative, which is taking shape in the form of minimum of understanding (MoU), an idea to accommodate all Tamil speaking (Tamils and Moors)to work on a common ground. The initiative is based on the principle of  bottom to top approach. An idea which confirms  some firm minimum standards to be met before any political talks begin to see any solution with a capacity of evolving to adopt new situations.

Refusal to work with others by the tiger supporters  means that they are  not really caring for the Tamils back home. And they are afraid of  losing their grip on vulnerable Tamils. And they are scared of being marginalised or totally ignored by the wider society. Ultimately this is the unavoidable end to  them. Therefore they have to integrate into the society before it is too late for them.

Tamil tiger supporters in the diasporas community seem firmly to believe that history did not make the man; the man (Velupillai Prabaharan) made history. In that sense they may come up with a new experiment of putting a surrogate leader like Y.Gopalasamy or one time vibrant Rev. Father Kaspar in charge of  the Tamils.  My humble advice for the pioneers of new experiments is that they should think about the English expression  “Cometh the hour, cometh the man.” Therefore desperately looking for a leader now is like quickly preparing a prey in the name of Tamils. Let time spin and nature  produce someone with the required leadership qualities to settle the due. Not only the Tamil speaking people but also the whole Sri Lanka needs a saviour.

E. Way Vs. H. Way : Mohamed Nisthar

Mohamed S R NistharDon’t be mislead at the outset by seeing the headline. It’s not Mrs. E. Way taking Mr. H. Way to a civil court in a divorce proceedings. And of course the above is nothing to do with English people either. It’s about the diasporas and their bizarre behaviour.

Two of my friends, who are from a Tamil ethnicity, are fairly educated and seem to have good views on many things yet they take issue with me on Sri Lankan politics. One of them, though  a heavy reader of  many things, is stubborn when it comes to Sri Lankan politics. He chooses a particular website to update his political knowledge, despite me encouraging him to surf different websites and use his own mental ability to form a unbiased views. But he refuses to do so, his reasoning being that he knows the basis of the issue.  The Singhalese are oppressors and the Tamils are oppressed, thus the Singhalese are all bad and the Tamils are all good. There is nothing in between. This is his summary of the issue. Permanent cure for this burning ethnic issue is cession. Cutting Sri Lanka into two like a cake. The Singhalese have their share and the Tamils have theirs. Criticizing tigers or their late leader is a betrayal of the Tamil cause.

On the other hand, the other friend, who was once active in Tamil politics at the time of the famous notion, “why those who ruled once can’t rule again” and distanced himself from politics on his  beloved leader Mr. Appapillai Amirthalingam’s   assassination  to the extent that he did not know who the Sri Lankan president was and what the other Rajapaksas got to do with the Sri Lankan government until recently. He has however refuelled the passion at the time of the demise of the Tamil tigers’ leader Mr. V. Prabharan.  He may have been overwhelmed by the electronic media and tired of talking about politics publicly. However he accuses, with respect, everyone who writes in the electronic media of having a lack of responsibility in putting forward ideas or suggestions in  solving the ethnic problems. He views the writers as champions or as the sort of people, who pass their leisure time using pen and paper in vain.

What my friends and hundreds of thousands of diasporas with a similar thinking capacity miss here is a vital point; that it is just two months since the tigers lost their irreplaceable  leader after a quarter century long saga, which has created the current conundrum. And they can’t  expect those, who write, to shut up and go on with their normal business since they  put up their case. Yes, of course there have been many more people writing about  Tamils politics, the Tamil tigers and incidental matters. And of course there are many who are simply getting advantage out of this riddle. But not all do the same dirty media dancing. These writings may seem similar in their face value but they are different in their ways, shapes and forms. These are intended to reach a different level of people and make them go for a quest. These are the indirect clues for strengthening any viable  solution. These are the natural reaction of a society whose legitimate right to free speech have long been denied. These are the voice of people who think that they have a duty towards their fellow citizens.

Those who have the ability and reason to write, criticise, comment and suggest should not hold back. They should contribute their share with commitment and try to ameliorate the situation regardless of the criticism they are faced with.  At the same time  they should not attempt anything prematurely,   and  they should not do anything with only half the knowledge which may lead to dangerous consequences, because others, like my friends, say they should do.

The ethnic question in Sri Lanka has not been without any suggested solutions. Separate state is a solution, accepting provincial council under a unitary constitution is another solution. Similarly  Tamil politicians merging fully with national parties may be a solution or the newly born idea of Tamils completely migrating to a barren territory in Canada or the southern tip of Argentina  can be another solution or foolishly continuing arm struggle is one more to add. But materialising any decent solution, which the Tamils will be fairly satisfied with,  is the problem.  Neither the residues of Tamil tigers nor the anti tigers have a mechanism to achieve any of it.  Many dare to say “Singhalawan modaian and Thamilan arivaali”. In fact it seems the other way round, because the Tamils always try something hard rather than easy.

Think about the “SRI” struggle, it was not a thing in time immemorial, which once made Sri Lankans  hate each other, the Singhalese and Tamils, for years,  and how cleverly it was  solved. A simple word from a Singhalese parliamentarian silently resolved the seemingly stupid struggle. We say the “Sri” struggle was stupid for the fact that no Tamils resisted carrying a Sri Lankan passport with “Sri” at a latter stage, while vigorously resisting to have same “Sri” on the number plate of their vehicle. Haven’t  we got anything to learn from this?

The Tamils could and should have resolved the “Singhala Only” Act by cleverly turning it to the Tamils’ benefit. What could have been an easy solution to rising tensions, turned out to be a defining event for nationalistic feelings. Even after manifestly winning a few crucial fights by Tamil tigers, the Tamils had ample opportunities to accept a fairly satisfactory solution, but their adamant or rightly saying greedy behaviour redirected their route to hard way solutions rather than easy ones.

One time activist at the Jaffna University, one of the editorial board members and regular columnist of Oru Paper, Mr. Ravi Arunachalam (aka  Seyon) wrote a couple of months before the perish of the Tamil tigers that Tamils want not simply one separate state but two, one is Tamil Ealam in Sri Lanka and the other one is Tamil Nadu in India. This is a fine sign of greediness. This is the columnist who blindly defames anyone who even constructively criticizes the Tamil tigers. His writings remind readers of Oru Paper that there should not be a neutral position for people in the Tamil question and whoever takes that position, is in his view, a traitor. This kind of view, whatever Tamil tigers did was right and will always be right and needing no scrutiny, distanced the right minded Tamils from the arm struggle, an undesirable way to handle a politically resolvable problem, like Tamils’ one in Sri Lanka.

Presumably an indoctrinated  reader of  Seyon or like writers has posted a remark in an internet article after the demise of the tigers that Sri Lankan Tamils must align with China, no matter how bad they have been in Sri Lankan politics, and do whatever necessary to destroy the stability of India and make the federal states system collapse.  This is another sign of the insane mentality which the diasporas have. They have not thought for a second that the idea of interfering with Indian politics negatively is like children passionately playing with fire. This is the very hardest, most dangerous and virtually impossible way of achieving anything good for Tamils.

Anti tiger Tamil politicians in Sri Lanka have been tolled and portrayed to be anti Tamils for no reasons other than being anti tigers. Moderate Singhalese politicians, who concern themselves with Tamils grievances and are willing to approach sympathetically have not been welcomed by Singhala chauvinists and Tamil tigers.  The fellow Tamil speakers, Sri Lankan Moors, were deemed to be less important. The “athiham paditha” Tamils like Dr. Sachchi Srikantha still believe that the tigers were right in their attempt of ethnically cleansing the Moors. Probably an everlasting obstacle in cajoling the Moors for a future political union with Tamils.

A recent example of hard way choice was the ‘Vanni Mission,’ the relief aid could have been sent through proper channels to the people in the camps in their time of need. Since they tried the hard way, it is still not clear whether this aid has reached its destination.

Similarly the latest ridiculous idea of creating a transnational government for Tamils of Sri Lanka  by few Tamil foreign nationals is another trial of risking the lives of  innocent Tamils who faced near death experiences and are trapped behind barbed wire camps. Their very fate to be or not to be there forever in the camps is to be seen through the Tamil foreign nationals activities.

The above all show one thing clearly time and again that the Tamils have opted for hard way  solutions for their political grievances rather than easy way ones. Why is that? Is there no one audacious to emerge and say that the hard way solution is not the direction for the Tamils’ political journey and reroute to easy ways? Unless easy ways are clearly identified by the society  and they work on them with open hearts, the writers will not retire.  Criticism, comments and remarks will continue with the satisfaction that at least  they discharge their duty towards the community they belong to or do business with.

TRANS-NATIONAL GOVERNMENT OF TAMIL EALAM : Mohamed Nisthar

Jan JananayagamSelvarasa_PathmanathanUruthrakumaran_VYou’re fired! This exclamation may be familiar with the viewers of Sir Alan Sugar’s “Apprentice”  on the BBC. However its speciality can’t be fully comprehended  by readers and  non viewers alike , because the exclamation itself doesn’t  reveal anything other than its literal meaning. But the way Sir Alan Sugar says  it definitely carries many clear messages to the person it’s said to.  No matter one’s social standing, academic achievements, physical appearance, their field of expertise or the nature of their indefatigability. If Sir Sugar says “you’re fired” he means it for a particular reason. So what relevance does the above have  with the “Trans – national government of Tamil Ealam ” a spontaneous question may emerge in the readers’ mind. Wait a minute, I’ll take you through and you may spot the relevance.

I recently happened to read an article on You Tube  that a group of Tamil Tigers and/or pro tiger Tamils urge the Tamil populous worldwide to support creating a trans-national government of Tamil Ealam.  And  before people asked them back “did you mean Tamil Ealam government in exile”, the group explained it is not as such, but it’s an unprecedented experiment to create  a body which may take the Tamils towards having the Tamil Ealam government in exile. In a nutshell, my understanding is Ithuthaan athu aahawe athuthaan ithu (this is that thus that  is this). Whether the experiment will produce a desired outcome or not, they mean that it will ultimately be a Tamil Ealam government in exile (TEGiE).

Therefore we assess straightaway the necessity and viability of the government in exile. One of the designers of the mass engagement with the Tamils Tigers, Basil Rajapaksa, publicly announced that he will curtail the idea of the TEGiE to the limit of a day dream. By this statement it appears that the first and foremost obstacle has already been laid before the inception of the exile government. My concern is not what Basil Rajapaksa said or may do, but what made the group come up with the idea without a need for it. What did  they learn from the experiments they did for the last quarter of a century. Why they think it is the right time to set up such a political organ, whereas a solid political platform  is already in existence  in Sri Lanka and crucially will it make any difference  and did they think of its eventualities.

They may come up with their usual  answers that they can’t reveal all those for some precautionary reasons. We put aside the reasons the group may give us and see what the  International Law says about a government in exile, in brief “Government in exile normally claims to be legitimate government of  a  territory, which was taken from them by subjugation. And the intended government in exile  may operate in foreign soils, maintain diplomatic sort of relationship with states and other political and non political entities, if the counterpart  is willing to engage with such an exile government”

After all the creation and functioning of an exile government is purely a political consideration with some legal consequences. Precise examples are Ache special territory (Indonesia), autonomous  Republic of Abkhazia (Georgia), Transnitria (Moldova), Nagorno Karabah ( Azerbaijan), Somaliland (Somalia),  Tibet (Tibet/China) and State of Palestine ( occupied  territory, including current state of Israel,  by Zionist Jews) . In almost all cases it is a pompous idea except the State of Palestine according to the international community.

In a Sri Lankan political context no reasonable person would  take issues with a political experiment as long as it does not keep the IDPs behind the barbed wire camps forever, claim deaths in scores, make people lose their limps in Tamils’ native places. We hope the working committee for the so called TEGiE dare not make the situation worsen and don’t do their experiment at the expense of the IDPs. They also should not forget the sufferings the IDPs face are partly attributable to the Tamils Tigers’ 30 years long experiments.

Therefore my  questions to this group are , can the “would be” Tamil Ealam government in exile establish that their territory has  been taken by military conquest, putting an end to their functioning government in their territory at the time of the conquest in the  first place? If they had a fully functioning government, had that been recognised at least by a member state of the United Nation? Had the country maintained a bilateral or multilateral relationship with the international community? Had that government complied with international law as it invokes the same for its existence. The list of questions is non exhaustive, but the answer is simply a big no.

Let’s see what one of the key members of the TEGiE, an attorney-at – law( solicitor) Mr. V.Uruthrakumaran  puts in his statement. உருத்திரகுமாரன் )According to him the  constitution of the TEGiE will be based on the “Vattukkotai Declaration” and the draft put forward for the formation of the “Interim Self Governing Authority” (ISGA). The former did not address the multiethnic nature of Sri Lanka and deliberately reduced it to a dual ethnic state status and their one time dream land of Tamil Ealam therefore is a mono -ethnic state.

The latter went a step ahead and denied any one’s participation other than the tiger Tamils, perhaps the tiger Tamils think the  “Tamilness” of other Tamils to be tested before they are considered in the political process. The advisory committee, full of pro tiger professors and doctors, underpins the question of possible “Tamilness” of  other Tamils. Therefore the above two pieces of near legislative precedents are fundamentally flawed.  Any future political set up derives from these concealed vitriolic documents are dangerous to the harmony among the Tamils and between the minority Tamils and the minority Moors (religiously Muslim), who are also indigenous inhabitants of the east, north and north-west of Sri Lanka. The inclusiveness, Mr. V.Uruthrakumaran  emphasized in his statement is simply a window dressing and nothing else. If the working committee is serious enough to work on the principle  of “inclusiveness” then they ought to amend the above documents, even for the hypothetical functions of the TEGiE.

It is also pertinent  to state two more interesting things I saw in the nine points statement made by Mr. Uruthrakumaran. The first one is  “working with partnership with the Tamils National Alliance (TNA)”. The TNA have been in the Sri Lankan parliament as the representatives of the Tamils, in fact they were the proxies of the Tamil Tigers. The TNA made Tamil voters boycott the presidential election saying it was for the Singhalese parliament and nothing to do with the Tamils, whilst warming up Singhalese parliament’s seats. How can sound minded Tamil voters accept that the TNA is their representatives in the Sri Lankan parliament. TNA’s claim to be democratically elected Tamils’ representatives can be confirmed only if they step down with immediate effect and stand again in by election and prove to the wider world the voters’ unambiguous  position. Until such thing happens the choice of the TNA for a partnership program is a grievous mistake in any future political proposals.

The second point, more interesting than the previous one, is “building a political program with the participation of Muslim representatives”. It goes against the very norm of the Tamil Tigers’ political advisor, late Mr. Anton Balasingam, who rejected the demand to accommodating the Moors as a party to the peace process at the outset. This very fact reflected in the draft for the ISGA, for which Mr. V.Uruthrakumaran was the master mind.  As far as the Tamil Tigers are concerned the Moors are a “cultural group” or “Tamil speaking Muslims” (a status co-ownership for the language barred and reduced  from full ethnicity) How would Mr. Uruthrakumaran expect the Moors to participate in any thing with the tiger Tamils, whilst the purge of mistrust between these two distinct ethnics, part and parcel of the demography in the north, east and north-west,  has not been done fully.

Though the groaning tiger faced, crossed guns behind the tiger head and with the bulleted circumference Maroon coloured flag, the items, which Emperor  Cholan had no knowledge of whatsoever, is under scrutiny; the geographical map of the Tamil Ealam also attracts comments.

The territory line starts from the south east of Sri Lanka, goes up all the way to Jaffna peninsula and takes a turn towards north west beyond Mannar and goes futher down through Horse Mountain (Kuthiraimalai) up to Kochchikade Bridge (northern  boundary of Negombo). Is it  the flag hoisted in front of the office of the TEGiE and is it the map hung behind the big table of the executive committee. Will the people of the east be ready to merge themselves with dictatorship type of tiger Tamil people of the north, and how the TEGiE will prove with evidence that the area south to Mannar and to the north of the Negombo suburb had been the legitimate territory of the Tamils or at least Tamil Kings had control of it. The task seems be very difficult and complex.

By and large the TEGiE will be added in the list of Old Boys Associations and  British Tamils Sports Associations if they totally ingnore the people in the land we talk about. It’s important that any interested politician comes forward with clean hands, free from perceived political opinion of the tiger, with a sense of commitment, without hidden agenda and from the midst of the people who had been experiencing the political calamity. The group has to go back to the very basics. Even though the upcoming elections in the war affected region are premature, it will be a definite scene that the Tamils will enthustically line up to cast their vote. If it happens then it’ll be a clear sign of  choice they have in their minds. It’ll also be an indicator that they prefer any home grown solution (as it’s said by the president) rather than an exported one by their umbilical cord relatives from overseas.

Tamil voters’ position was confirmed in the recent European Parliamentary  election especially in England. The so called human rights campaigner and possible executive committee member of TEGiE,  Ms. Jan Jananayagam openly said in an interview on a Tamil radio that she had no other things in her election manifesto other than the “Tamils genocide issue”, however two weeks later she came up with a list of environmental, economic and political issues as her concerns for the EP election.  The fine opportunism.

She then went on, at an interview at Riz Khan show in the Aljazeera TV, as a response to a question  “what do you say about the killing of innocent people by the Tamil tigers”, saying,  go and ask tigers, an appalling answer.  The president Rajapaksa gave a  political answer (a lie) “maybe a 100 people died in the crossfire” to a similar question put to him  at a different  occasion. But Ms. Jananayagam could have given  at least a diplomatic answer (a polished lie- which I’m not encouraging) such as “it is very hard to get first hand evidence due to the intensified fight in the region therefore  it’s not right to comment on the allegation of tigers’ killing of innocent people”.   The Tamil and non Tamil  voters rightly identified that her human rights perceptions  are very different from what they see as human rights and she lost the election when she equated the humans rights to Tamils’ only human rights and the Tamils’ only human rights to the tigers’ only human rights.

So in Sir Alan Suger’s view anybody to be entrusted with a specific task that person should be identified without any mistake. In “ Apprentice” Sir Alan Suger’s task is to see a person’s suitability in the business sense; that the person should strictly observe business ethics without any trick or crook  while working hard to maximise the profit margin. If the job is done to his satisfaction without any doubt then that person is entrusted for the task otherwise he mercilessly says you’re fired and viewers no doubt agree with his decision.

The Tamils have been cheated by one after the other experiments, sugar coated venomous promises, unchecked reliances and money motivated tasks. Until the Tamils stand up and say you’re fired to the untested actors they can’t eradicate the political sufferings so easily. As the TEGiE have not come up with any plausible answers to the many questions posed, the only thing which remains to be said is ‘You’re Fired!’

STAGE SETTING : Mohamed SR. Nisthar

Mohamed S R NistharIt’s not unusual for a winning party to be euphoric.  It’s equally true for the losing party in the conflict to be dispirited, and this is a common scene in Sri Lanka and across the metropolitan  cities of Europe.  After all, it’s the Tamil people, who are to be calm and prudent in contemplating the next move. A quieter but more profound move,  that is to say, a vital and crucial part in shaping the political landscape of  Sri Lanka and of its minorities, especially the Tamils.

After nearly 61 long years the question of equality among the citizens, diversity of the multi-ethnic societies and the basis for prosperity of the tiny island of Sri Lanka has reached the next level needing a careful solution.

One party in the conflict, the LTTE, had no plan “B” for their claim for a separate state, Tamil Ealam, logically a dystopian state.  The other party, the GoSL,  quickly learnt through its failure in the armed conflict and  determined to wipe out the cry for freedom of the Tamils. Because the cry came in the form of a separate state from a military outfit, which lacked diplomacy and frequently even commonsense . The  arms rich, but  politically  poor LTTE’s  short sight of the geo-politics and contemporaneous  world order paved the way to their perish of no return.

The immediate past of the LTTE unequivocally showed that they heavily relied on the GoSL’s mistakes and politics of India rather than their own military and/or diplomatic ability to reach their ultimate goal. Thus their SOS signal through the diaspora to the world seemed to be the wrong signal at the wrong time at the wrong place and importantly for the wrong reason and that made the world see a brutal horror film in reality. The distasteful or even painful end to the LTTE, the very fact, which the LTTE’s sympathisers  around the world are adamant not to accept. But for the others it is an unavoidable or deserved end to the betrayers of the Tamils. For their unforgivable mistake they are no longer suitable for the title of  Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam. They are simply Tamil Tigers – TT). Not only  did their dream land of Tamil Ealam die with them but also thousands of innocent lives were lost in vain.

So what is the next move for the rest of the Tamils? What has the GoSL to offer to its minorities, especially to Tamil citizens? And how would the international community interact? These are the remaining questions.   Time and again it has been reiterated by the Sri Lankan presidents that the fight against the TTs is for lasting peace. Therefore it is obvious for the Tamils to expect peace since the TTs were defeated as GoSL claims, or at least  TTs’ statement of silencing their guns through their international spokesperson.  But peace is not a commodity to be given by one and taken by the other. It’s a process, which needs a collective effort by all parities, i.e. the President, the Parliament, the Singhalese, the Tamils, the Moors(religiously Muslims) and the international community.

If so, what is the role of the president in this process, one would ask. The answer is, it’s manifold and it can be prioritised  in the following order. Re settling the IDPs as quickly as possible, disarming the gunners and underworld gangs, who are a possible threat to the innocent Tamils, Moors and Sinhalese, seeking a way of assessing and compensating the families who lost their  bread winners or lost their limbs  in the crossfire, putting forward a draft power sharing mechanism for the minorities, implementing a national curriculum which makes  the Tamil language compulsory for the Sinhalese students and Sinhala language for the Tamil speaking students from year five and a year upward  by every passing year up to  A/Ls.,  creating a system of promotion for  court staffs, including judges, police force and other vital government servants only on their tri or dual languages skills with working knowledge of the relevant area in order to make every government servant be able to serve in the language the recipients feel comfortable with.

The current Sri Lankan President is of course brave and strong among the equals of the past but certainly not a great President. If President J.R. Jeyawardene, the alleged perpetrator of the July ’83 pogrom against the Tamils across the island,  was to be blamed for his political short sight and for the TTs’ growth then no doubt the President, Mahinda Rajapaksha, will get the credit for eliminating the threat of the TTs. But to be a great president the task is very much different from just winning the war. The great President must win the hearts and minds of the country collectively.

He may  not be far away from manifestly proving his ability to restore peace in Sri Lanka by delivering what he pledged to the Tamils and other minority ethnics of Sri Lanka on 19th May 2009 on declaring the end of war in the Sri Lankan Parliament.  If the President is serious about winning and retaining his office in the next presidential election then he should see clearly that it is very much hinged on his utterance and actions in the days to come. In the Tamils’ history, former President J.R. Jeyawardane  notoriously holds a place. However President Mahinda Rajapaksa may remain  as Sri Lanka’s Bismarck in  history, if he attempts to amend the Executive Presidential set up of the constitution and takes all necessary measures to unite the country with fair and reasonable power sharing to the satisfaction of the minorities.

Similarly, the role of  the Parliament is crucial to the tasks ahead. It  cannot be a club of racially motivated people any longer.  The place should reclaim its conventional duty of  restoring democracy. The Parliament should give its two third majority to do necessary amendments to the constitution. It should help the President  create an Indian style of Presidential Office with a guaranteed selection of all ethnics of Sri Lanka as presidents in rotation depending on the individual’s  contribution to the country and his or her antecedents. Parties in the parliament should think of introducing a proportional representation voting system similar to the one which prevails in Northern Ireland to accommodate the ethnic minorities with their fair share.

The Singhalese are allowed to express their natural emotions, but they should not go beyond the limits. The world currently understands your joy, which is derived from the constant fear you had for the TTs. The eyes of the international  community are fixed on Sri Lanka now. Any political party’s or community’s stupid behaviour will produce undesirable consequences.  What the Sinhalese mass must understand is  that the  Tamils and other minorities are not their foes and without their true participation they cannot have the island paradise they want to see. The minorities will motivate themselves to participate only when they feel there is a point to their participation. Sinhalese have a big say in the days to come. Be prepared to reject the idea of Sinhalization of  entire island. Do not go behind the politicians who promote the idea that Sri  Lanka is only for the Sinhalese and others are its second class citizens or simply a migrated crowd who live under the discretion of the Sinhalese people.  Listen to the Sinhalese leaders and intellectuals who carefully promote race relation and power sharing with the minorities to keep the country moving through the challenges of the era of  globalisation.

We know for sure that the Tamils are divided into three, pro tigers, anti tigers and critics of both the government and tigers. It is also worth noting the innocently dangerous  pro tiger diaspora, the main financiers and the propaganda machine at this juncture. This diaspora community, in my view, has blood on their hands. Because they never insisted that the TTs give up their arms when the TTs lost control over Kilinochi, the de facto capital of TT land, and took the people with them as human shields. They never put pressure on European governments or EU or UN to save the people who were caught up in the crossfire in the first place, but simply reflected what the TTs wanted. The leaderless, sort of  makeshift Student Organization, British Tamil Forum, British Tamils Law and Advocacy Wing and Vanni Mission etc,  all wanted the ban on TTs lifted and the international community  to accept TTs as one and only representative of the Tamils  first, then to declare the north and the east as the homeland of the Tamils with the right to self determination, then to put  pressure only on Sri Lanka  government  and not on TTs to stop the war, then to give food and medicine to the IDPs.  The easiest back door attempt to make a foundation for  the dream of Tamil Ealam.

What the diaspora overlooked was that every time they asked the international community for help it was always too late.  They have not acted on their own  rather they waited for the orders from Vanni to be delivered  through pro TTs media, such as GTV, Theepam and IBC as to their actions.  The above media not only misled the pro tigers but also kept them  in dark by their military analysis on the basis of  monsoons and political one on the Tamil Nadu’s politics. They tried to portray the state of Tamil Nadu in  India’s shoes, meaninglessly diminishing India’s ability to a minimal level and Tamil Nadu’s  in a huge proportion.

It will be a great help for the Tamils back home if the diaspora community remain quiet or at least stop chanting the slogans “our leader Prabaharan” and “we want Tamil Ealam”  for a while allowing the  international  community to engage themselves fully in the making of Sri Lanka for the sake of all citizens.

The pro tiger TNA has lost credibility since it did not discharge its duty at the time when the civilians lives were at risk. Their accounts and briefing to  foreign countries and the diaspora about the terrible fighting and inside stories were utterly biased. They were afraid  of their masters, the TTs. Therefore they have no legitimate claim to be the Tamils’ representatives anymore. The sooner they resign  the better for the future of the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

The anti tigers spend huge amounts of time analysing everything from the birth of the one time supremo of the TTs, to the mysterious final seconds of his death and the way the diaspora community dream about snatching Tamil Ealam from Sri Lanka. Educating the disapora about the non viability of Tamil Ealam and the possibility of a fair share option for the political survival of Tamils with the help of the international  community is a required task for them, if they are prepared to  positively contribute to rebuild the ruined Tamil society and their legitimate right for freedom and a fearless life.

On the other hand the critics of the GoSL and TTs have great potential to act as mediators between the Tamils, the GoSL  and even the Sinhalese mass.  There are many Sinhalese and Tamil organizations all over Europe and the rest of the western world. They can identify like minded people and work together as one voice for safeguarding minorities’ rights and betterment of all Sri Lankans with  mutual respect and collective responsibility.

The next is the Moors, religiously Muslim, the scapegoats and unwanted stock for TTs. However, they should not distance themselves from the current politics because they  wear caps and grow long beards or the women wear Hijab.  They should not feel that the current political chaos has nothing to with them because of their past experience with the TTs. They should not think that Sri Lanka is  somebody else’s country and they have no say on its bad and good times. It has been always their tradition and rights from the time of  the Kings to be in their cabinet and holding a high position in politics and in making and shaping the Sri Lanka’s political life. For Moors to be a true example of their religious ideology is to reflect themselves in performing their duties towards their country and make sure they enjoy their unalienable  rights with dignity.

It is true that the bitter experience they had at the hands of the TTs made them think differently. The so called Oluvil Declaration for “Muslim Thesam” initiated by the students of the South Eastern university was a by product of the TTs’ terrorism on Moors, the indigenous people of east, north and north west of Sri Lanka who lived in harmony with other ethnics for centuries.

The TTs’ rise and fall  can be a case study for the defenders of the Muslim Thesam,  the  name and the concept of which do not reflect anything other than a tit for tat.  Kill those dangerous, unwanted and non viable idea of separation from its bud and bury them. Having said that, however, it does not and cannot mean that they  should willingly lose their political voice or their ethnic identity. They have a right to loudly say they are Moors like others say they are Tamils and Sinhalese and  religiously Muslim like Hindus, Christians and Buddhists. They  can also loudly say that together they are ready to rebuild our broken societies and country.

Most of the Tamils arguably think that the international community has done nothing or kept quiet at the time of need. The international community  were in a task of a balancing exercise between what they were told by the Tamil diaspora about what has been happening and what has actually been happening according to their diplomatic missions in Sri Lanka. The second thing that the international community wanted was to stick to their own  resolution of defeating an armed group, regardless of what name we call the military outfit by, if they possess anything other than conventional firing weapons like AK 47 and sorts, any armed organization with different fighting units such as infantry, naval, air force, even in the rudimentary level, and most importantly a suicide squad  is great cause for concern. The TTs’ unnecessarily tremendous growth in this direction held back the international community from active engagement in solving the problem. As far as the international community is concerned the TTs are not the solution but part of the problem to the Tamils’ political aspiration.  Therefore  it put the Sri Lankan government as first preference in the political list.

And almost all of the TTs’ sympathizers believed that their protest in the streets of Europe made the governments of their respective countries look into matters, but  this is not the case. Sri Lanka is not like a remote village in the Zing Zhang province of China.  Sri Lanka has been on their check list for many reasons. The European Union, American administration and UN are well informed of the conflict which prevailed for more than a quarter of century in Sri Lanka, and their solemn resolute  not to interfere  until the war come to an end regardless of the way in which it ends, (I have mentioned this very fact in my previous article “politics within politic” in Tamil on 06th April 2009 in the Global Tamil News) made them sit back.

Therefore the international community’s positive interference in Sri Lanka now is imminent. If the Sri Lanka government does anything, which is suspicious or simply a dragging exercise  in attending unsolved problems of ethnic question and their political aspiration then the international community may show their big stick and warn of the punishment awaiting.

In this day and age of globalization and countries’ interdependency on regional and international basis on each others, the GoSL may not attempt to waste its potentials to be a promising country in south east Asia  and become one in the list of failed states. Let’s see whether the politics of Sri Lanka make someone ends up in the Hague on ICC trial or to Oslo for a noble prize.
