கூட்டுப் படைகளின் பிரதானி பதவியிலிருந்து ஜெனரல் சரத் பொன்சேகா இன்று உத்தியோகபூர்வமாக ஓய்வு பெற்றார். எதிர்வரும் முதலாம் திகதியுடன் ஓய்வுபெறுவதாக ஜனாதிபதி மஹிந்த ராஜபக்ஷவிடம் சரத் பொன்சேகா கடந்த 12ஆம் திகதி கடிதம் ஒன்றைக் கையளித்திருந்தார். அவரது கடிதத்தை ஜனாதிபதி உடனடியாக ஏற்றுக்கொண்டார்.
இதனையடுத்துக் கருத்து தெரிவித்த ஜெனரல் சரத் பொன்சேகா, ” இராணுவத் தளபதியாகவும், கூட்டு படைகளின் பிரதானியாகவும் நான் ஆற்றிய சேவைகள் திருப்திகரமாகவே இருந்தன. இராணுவத்தினருக்கும், அவர்களது குடும்பத்தினருக்கும் எனது நல்லாசிகள். இன்னும் இரண்டு நாட்களில் எனது எதிர்காலத் திட்டம் குறித்து நான் அறிவிப்பேன்” எனத் தெரிவித்தார்.
